Orion Rising was a module for FASA's Star Trek: The Role Playing Game written in 1986. It was the seventh of eleven licensed adventures published in FASA magazines, this one in Stardate Magazine vol.2 #10, and was written by J. Andrew Keith, author of "Margin of Profit" and "The Dixie Gambit". In this campaign, a Starfleet crew was assigned to destroy the Brenton-class USS Devon, a captured Federation starship drydocked at an Orion space station, to prevent its use for piracy.
Description[]
- "Gentlemen," Spiravos says quietly, "I'll not mince words. I need volunteers for a dangerous job, one the analysts downstairs give no more than a 40 percent chance of success to. ... You all remember what happened when that madman Khan seized the Reliant. Well, Devon's a combat ship, not a research cruiser, and I shudder to think how much damage she could do to our shipping lanes."
Summary[]
Defending Federation shipping along the frontier of the Triangle against increasing acts of piracy, the cruiser Devon and three destroyers come to the aid of a freighter convoy. As they approach, the two attacking Orion blockade runners split up and flee. Devon pursues one raider into a nearby asteroid field, but is struck and heavily damaged by a planetoid fragment. To broadcast a clear distress call, Captain Travis sends his engineer Alain DuPont in a shuttle. As DuPont departs the area, undetected amid asteroidal debris, Devon is captured and towed to the Workday starport. The second raider, Asheakadh, is captured by one of the destroyers.
Later, at Starbase 10, Commodore Konstantine Spiravos asks a volunteer crew to sneak into the system, board Devon while it is in drydock, and destroy the ship before Orions finish repairs. They will travel aboard Asheakadh, accompanied by DuPont and Akhid Ruzheer, an Orion prisoner who agrees to serve in exchange for a reduced sentence.
When Asheakadh arrives in the system, the crew is challenged to explain their presence to officials, dock at the starport, evade security and technicians on the station and aboard Devon, power up the vessel, set an antimatter imbalance in the warp drive, get away aboard Asheakadh before Devon blows, and avoid any pursuing Orion vessels.

- TOS movie: The Wrath of Khan – Khan's hijacking of the USS Reliant was cited by Spiravos.
- FASA RPG module: Federation Ship Recognition Manual, Star Trek III: Starship Combat Game – Provides specifications for the Brenton-class starship as well as some Orion vessels for use in the scenario.
- FASA RPG module: The Triangle Campaign – The author suggested that gamemasters could integrate "A Family Affair" from this book into their "Orion Rising" scenario.
Background[]
- History recorded the mission as successful. The accompanying "Jaynz Ships of the Galaxy" column in Stardate Magazine stated that Devon's explosion significantly damaged the starport.
- The magazine included a profile of an Ohmera-class patrol ship, an Orion vessel mainly used by customs and police, but occasionally by privateers.
