Glynnis bookshelf

A bookshelf containing a copy of Othello.

Othello is a play by William Shakespeare.

History and specifics[]

The play contained a famous death scene in which the titular character killed his wife Desdemona.

A bookshelf in the 2240s apartment of Montgomery Scott amd Glynnis Campbell featured copies of Othello and Hamlet. (TOS - The Best of Star Trek comic: "Retrospect")

In 2371, Deanna Troi listened as Data, reprogrammed to communicate in the Tamarian language, retold the death scene in Othello to a group of Tamarians in terms of mythos. In Data's version, reduced to basic words by the universal translator, Troi heard phrases such as "Othello with a light. Desdemona in her bed. The light quenched. Prometheus with the fire. Desdemona restored?" Troi tried to stun Data with a phaser when he was suddenly overcome by the story and began strangling Ambassador Denin, and Geordi La Forge deactivated him. (TNG - The Sky's the Limit short story: "Friends With the Sparrows")

In 2373, the Doctor performed the aria from Othello for Talent Night aboard USS Voyager. He practiced the scene with Kes in the role of Desdemona. A power failure prompted him to perform the closing solo a cappella. (VOY - Distant Shores short story: "Talent Night")

Quotes[]

In an illusion in 2269, Spock and Spock One sparred. During their mental battle, Spock quoted Othello, Act 5 scene 2: "Are there no stones in heaven but what serve for the thunder?" (TOS novel: Spock Must Die!)

In the year 2373, Julian Bashir quoted a line from Othello, Act 3, Scene 3: "O! Beware, my lord, of jealousy / It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on". (DS9 comic: "Lwaxana Troi and the Wedding of Doom")

In January 2381, T'Ryssa Chen quoted an idiom spoken by the clown in Othello, Act 3, Scene 1: "Thereby hangs a tale". She said it to Jean-Luc Picard after the captain made a pun. (TNG novel: Greater Than the Sum)
