"Out of Time" was the last of three TNG comic stories in Star Trek: The Next Generation Special, Issue 2, accompanying "The Choice" and "Cry Vengeance" in the summer of 1994. Written by Michael Jan Friedman and published by DC Comics, the story featured the USS Bozeman's Captain Morgan Bateson.
Summary[]
At spacedock, Morgan Bateson, CO of the Bozeman in the year 2278, speaks to Counselor Bailey about his extreme frustration at finding himself in the 2360s decade. He points out that not only are all of his friends and loved ones dead, but his starship is considered an obsolete museum piece. He thinks retraining to adapt to the 24th century won't work, and he storms out of Bailey's office. Bailey is aware that Bateson's crew feels nearly as bad. Bailey confers with Counselor Deanna Troi, who was involved when the USS Enterprise-D saved Bozeman from a temporal causality loop, and she has an idea.
While sulking in the spacedock's vast bar, Bateson overhears a woman calling for him, but she's looking for a different Morgan, and he walks sullenly to his quarters. Shortly after, he hears a chime at the door, and he recognizes the visitor – it's Montgomery Scott, who says he's staying until Bateson feels better.

Appendices[]
Related media[]
- TNG episode: "Cause and Effect" – The USS Enterprise-D and USS Bozeman escaped from a temporal causality loop in 2368.
- TNG novel: Ship of the Line – DTI agents debriefed Bateson and Bozeman's crew in 2368.
- TNG episode & novelization: Relics – The Enterprise-D recovered Montgomery Scott from a transporter pattern buffer in 2369 and "loaned" him the Goddard.
Background[]
- The story implied that Bateson's arrival in the 24th century was quite recent — he was still wearing his 23rd century Starfleet uniform. Yet he was rescued in 2368, a year earlier than Montgomery Scott. More time seemed to have elapsed than was apparent from the story itself.
- Based on placement in the DC Comics Timeline as it correlates to the Memory Beta Chronology, this story took place about a month after Scott arrived in 2369. Despite Bateson seeming to have accepted life in 2368, at least publicly, in TNG novel: Ship of the Line and DTI novel: Watching the Clock, he was clearly still frustrated by his circumstances in 2369.
