The Outer Banks is a coastal resort area spanning most of North Carolina and parts of Virginia in the United States along the Atlantic Ocean. It is made up of barrier islands and beaches.
History[]
In 1585, the British government established its first colony in North America on the Outer Banks, the Roanoke Colony. In 1587, the colony disappeared without a trace. Colonists left behind only one clue to their fate: the word "Croatoan". (TNG novel: Grounded)
On 17 December, 1903, the flight of the first airplane took place in the Outer Banks aboard the Wright Flyer, piloted by Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright. In 2152, Daniels told Jonathan Archer about his interest in the history of flight, including the Wright Brothers' historic flight. (ENT episode & novelization: Shockwave)
In the year 2254, the USS Enterprise's library computer records of the Wright Flyer taking off in the Outer Banks were viewed by Talosians. (TOS episode: "The Cage")
Prior to 2269, Leonard McCoy spent a summer and fall on the Outer Banks with a girlfriend named Sara. He recalled leaving her after mosquitos came, and that it was the last time he abandoned everything for love. However, he could not recall her last name. (TOS novel: Planet of Judgment)
While his daughter Demora Sulu was at Starfleet Academy, Hikaru Sulu sent her inspirational messages, including stories about the first flight at Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk along with man's first landings on Luna and Mars, and Zefram Cochrane's warp flight.
