This article is about a science officer. You may be looking for Technician Owens.

Owens was a 23rd century Human man. He was a junior science officer who served aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise in the 2260s under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.

Biography[]

In the year 2268, Owens was a member of a landing party sent to survey Octavius IV. He was one of four caught in a cave-in and temporarily marooned on the planet, along with Kirk, Ensign Selena Karras, and Crewman Autry. He thought he broke his leg during the cave-in, and had splints bracing his knee to help him walk.

The landing party found themselves trapped in a 50-foot-deep depression. Owens' tricorder located a food source, edible stalks similar to sugar cane. A little later, Owens found plants with berries containing a compound that dissolved organic compounds. Using a sling to shoot the berries into coral-like walls of the depression, Kirk was able to create handholds and climb the cliff face, then pull the others out with vines. Owens and Autry remained at the cliff, as Owens couldn't walk well and they'd been signaling the ship from this site for two days. The landing party was safely retrieved after the third day.
