The Paladin class was a 26th century Federation starship class, a temporal battlecruiser and variant subclass of the 23rd century Ranger-class battlecruiser, in Starfleet service in the 2550s decade. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", STO website: Agents of Yesterday: 26th Century Ship Stats)
Service history and specifications[]
The Paladin class was based on the 23rd century Ranger-class battlecruiser. The Ranger was active in the year 2270, where the Temporal Integrity Commission recruited temporal agents from. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "The Once and Future Agent", STO - Agents of Yesterday short story: "Recruitment Drive")
The configuration of flat saucer suspended below a pair of thinning nacelles, with bulky bussard collectors, also recalled the design of the USS Artemis, launched in 2371 to safely explore the Nexus energy ribbon. (ST video game: Legends)
Previously, a Paladin-class had operated as destroyer with a crew of 30 in the 23rd and 24th centuries. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows, DS9 - Mission Gamma novel: Lesser Evil)
Structurally, the ship consisted of an ellipsoid, thick saucer section, with a pair of warp nacelles attached on raised nacelle pylons connected with another by a mission pod, at the hull's aft. With a deflector dish extending from a section underneath the saucer, the configuration was reminiscent of the 2370s-era Akira-class escort. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
By the 26th century, the Paladin class operated as battlecruiser. For the USS Paladin (NCV-88000), Starfleet focused on its tactical systems for task force and team-based operations. As a result of the Temporal Cold War, the class was also refitted into temporal battlecruiser, incorporating timeship technologies such as the molecular reconstruction mechanic. (STO website: Agents of Yesterday: 26th Century Ship Stats)
Ships of the class, including the Paladin, participated in the Battle of Procyon V alongside the USS Enterprise-J against the Temporal Liberation Front and their Sphere Builder allies in 2554. (STO - Future Proof missions: "Ragnarok", "Battle of Procyon V")
The Paladin was armed with phaser banks, phaser dual cannons and photon torpedo launchers . As a combat-oriented timeship, it could deploy a heavy phaser assault platform. Defensive systems included deflector shields and tractor beams. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Due to the opening of a new front of the Temporal Cold War in the year 2410, the Federation Temporal Agency and its Temporal Agent Timot Danlen worked with Khitomer Alliance authorities native to the 25th century. Some commanding officers of that time were recruited as temporal agents, and given access to starship classes of the 26th and 31st centuries. This included the 2550s-era Paladin and 2270s-era Ranger classes, which now shared their technical capabilities as temporal battlecruisers. (STO - Agents of Yesterday mission: "The Once and Future Agent")
Livery[]
In the 25th century, the design of the Paladin-class temporal battlecruiser allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of hull materials, which could be modified further at shipyards. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
