A parrot was a type of bird native to Earth, noted for its vividly-colored plumage and ability to repeat random phrases. Similar species existed on other planets.

Moabirds on Elysium had parrot-like heads. (TOS novel: Burning Dreams)

In the 2240s or 2250s decades, Shimizu Hana Sulu owned a parrot that ate her son Hikaru Sulu's pet iguana. Later, the parrot was eaten by a Tellurian greencat. Hikaru recalled the events while visiting his great-grandfather Tetsuo Inomata in California in 2259. (TOS novel: The Kobayashi Maru)

In Iowa, Winona Kirk fed her parrot smelly pellets that Peter Kirk disliked. (TOS novel: Sarek)

In the 2260s, an epidemic on Earth was fatal to parrots and several other wildlife species. In 2267, the USS Enterprise was assigned to retrieve some parrots from other planets in order to repopulate them on Earth. The crew also brought back members of bear, camel, chimpanzee, hippopotamus, leopard, kangaroo, platypus, rhinoceros, tiger, turtle, and zebra species.
