Paul Austin, a 20th century Human, had undergone genetic engineering and was one of Khan Noonien Singh's augments, cryogenically frozen in 1996. He traveled on the spaceship SS Botany Bay and was unfrozen in the year 2267. In that year, he reported the Khan that he had secured the recreation room of the Federation starship USS Enterprise. (TOS - Star Trek 2 novelization: Space Seed)

In an alternate timeline in which Khan won the Eugenics Wars and Humanity underwent genetic engineering en masse, Austin and his fellow Augment Liam MacPherson were among the ancestors of Lord-Commander Benjamin Sisko of Earthfleet, his son Jacob Sisko and Optio Miles O'Brien.
