Paul Fairman was a Human in the 24th century.
Biography[]
Prior to joining Starfleet aboard USS Voyager, Paul Fairman was a mercenary who was hired to become a member of the Maquis and fight the Cardassians. At some point he was assigned to Chakotay's cell, and due to fighting for money rather than politics Chakotay had him pegged as a potential subversive and troublemaker.
Later after the cell became stranded in the Delta Quadrant with Voyager, he and the other Maquis merged the two crews together. Fairman was then given the rank of ensign. Whilst going over the roster of the Maquis, Chakotay shared his worries of Fairman with his new captain. Fortunately Fairman kept a low profile so far, doing his assigned work but not one bit more than the bare minimum expected of him.
In 2371, Ensign Fairman had been following Neelix through the galley and for the last half hour, badgering him to scrounge up a portable external power supply—something that could be small enough to be used with privacy.
When Neelix was called to the bridge by Captain Kathryn Janeway for his advice on distress call from a newly encountered species, he asked Fairman with help in the mess hall. At first the ensign was apprehensive of being involved in kitchen duty, but relented after Neelix would consider getting him a portable external power supply. All Fairman had to do was stir the boiling pots of phu and paga stew until Neelix returned from the bridge.
When Neelix returned fifteen minutes later, he found the paga stew had boiled over, causing it to create smoke. Neelix sent Fairman to the Doctor while he would try and salvage lunch. At lunch, Ensign Fairman returned to apologize for the mess, and for Neelix's assistance in obtaining a portable external power supply. Though he avoided answering Neelix's query on why he needed such a device, but the ensign assured the Chief Morale Officer, that it would boost the morale of the crew in general. This endeared Neelix who agreed to help the ensign and to show his sincerity provided Fariman with an extra large slice of the pagaloaf smothered in a pungent Drayonian red sauce.
Neelix would put Fairman in charge of the galley while he served the officers a lavish meal at the their meeting. To the surprise of Chakotay and the others, Neelix had hopes to make Fairman into a backup chef. (VOY novel: Incident at Arbuk)
