Paul Stamets was a Human man, a Starfleet lieutenant and science officer assigned to the USS Discovery as research engineer in the 2250s decade. (DSC episode: "Context Is for Kings")
Biography[]
In the 2250s decade, Stamets and his colleague Justin Straal had a terraforming lab on Deneva. Together they studied the Prototaxites stellaviatori mushroom that the USS Somerville discovered. Stamets was invited to a kasseelian opera show with Straal and his wife Amelia. However, Stamets discovered that the mushrooms contained star paths. Two years later, Stamets and Straal presented their work at Alpha Centauri to the Federation Research Council.
Following their presentation, Stamets met a Starfleet medical officer, Dr. Hugh Culber at a bar where Culber hummed a Kasseelian opera. He met Dr. Culber again before taking a shuttle to Deneva. Upon his return to Deneva, Stamets was against Straal's deal to work with Starfleet. (DSC comic: "Annual 2018")
