Pearl Harbor is a harbor located on the island of Oʻahu, which is part of the state of Hawaii on Earth. Much of the harbor and surrounding area served as a base for the United States Navy during the 20th and 21st centuries.
On December 7, 1941, the nation-state of the Empire of Japan staged a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, hoping to cripple the American naval forces. While devastating for American forces, the carriers which were the primary targets were not at the harbor at the time, and only three ships were permanently lost in the attack. In the aftermath of the attack, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt asked for and received a declaration of war upon Japan, thus bringing the United States of America into World War II.
On the eve of the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York City and Washington, DC, Gary Seven reflected that he would not stop the events from occurring, just as he would not stop the the attack on Pearl Harbor or the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. (TOS short story: "Assignment: One")
In the 24th century, the attack on Pearl Harbor was still remembered by humans as a preamble to war, and was compared to similar attacks such as that on Station Salem-One. (TNG episode: "The Enemy")
