Pegasus was the name of a winged horse in Greek mythology.

Equiraptors resembled Pegasus. James T. Kirk thought that Athene's species was called "pegasus", but Amelinda Lukarian pointed out that Pegasus was mythical, while Athene was real. (TOS novel: Enterprise: The First Adventure)

The USS Enterprise, prior to its refit beginning in 2270, had always reminded Kirk of Pegasus in flight. (TOS novel: Ex Machina)
