In 2371, Jake Sisko considered an internship at the Pennington School to study writing, but decided to wait another year before considering it again due to the wealth of story information he would get by remaining on Deep Space 9. (DS9 episode: "Explorers")

- While this school does not actually exist, Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, does in reality have its own well renowned creative writing program. Wellington-based New Zealand fan writer, fanzine editor and convention organizer, Lana Pennington-Brown, who was befriended by several of the production staff of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, inspired the name of the fictitious educational institution.
- The Star Trek: Vanguard series of novels features a 23rd century journalist named Tim Pennington, after whom David Mack has confirmed the Pennington School is named.'
