Background[]

2270s-2350 cdore sleeve

Commodore's uniform sleeve rank insignia image.

Some vessels in the game are shown to be commanded normally by lieutenant commanders and commanders, meaning that this character might sometimes be portrayed at those ranks, even though a full post captain's rank insignia is shown here for the purposes of this wiki. In cases where large capital vessels and flagships are employed, it is also plausible that the CO referred to as "captain" is actually a commodore or admiral.

Captain Kosnett could be encountered in the SFC game series in command of a number of vessels depending on the random association of personnel names to ships in play:

Since the NPC (non-player character) lists used for the game software were re-used for the 24th century game Starfleet Command III, there is also a 24th century character bearing the same name. There is a possibility it is the same person, who somehow either aged gracefully or was spared from aging by stasis or time travel.

Kongo

USS Kongo.

No history or fate is established for this character in licensed Star Trek, in which the name was randomly assigned by the SFC game software. This character's name was derived from the source material that the Starfleet Command game series was based on, the limited license RPG publication Star Fleet Battles, where Kosnett is a recurring character who rises to high rank in Starfleet, usually depicted as the CO of the USS Kongo. In turn, the Star Fleet Battles creators took the name from a real-world American wargame designer active in the 1970s and 1980s, Philip S. KosnettWP, later a career foreign service officer who rose to the position of ambassador. The name recurred again in unlicensed sources as part of the fan fiction Starship Exeter series.

Apocrypha[]

Star Fleet Universe/Star Fleet Battles[]

The career of Philip KosnettSFU in Star Fleet Universe/Star Fleet Battles includes rising to the rank of commodore and commanding a substantial fleet element in a major engagement with the Klingons in year 183 (which corresponds to the Star Trek movie-era at the turn of the 24th century in canon timeline references) in "Holding Out For A Hero"SFU.

Other appearances are as follows:
