- For the primary universe counterpart, see Phillip Boyce.
In the mirror universe, Doctor Phillip Boyce served as the chief medical officer of the ISS Enterprise in the mid 23rd century.
While in medical school, he read the 19th century novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde's mirror counterpart. He only did so as it was forbidden. At the time, he believed that the novel was "silly."
Boyce was only member of the Enterprise crew who was aware that the youthful visage of Captain Christopher Pike's mirror counterpart was an illusion, though he remained ignorant of the fact that the Talosian's mirror counterparts had created it. In reality, Pike's "once luxuriant dark hair with the widow’s peak was reduced to thinning strands of gray" while his blue eyes were dulled and red-rimmed. His hands continually trembled. Although Pike's chronological age was only 45, Boyce believed that, in his true form, he appeared to be twice that.
Every night, Boyce served Pike numerous alcohol beverages including Saurian brandy and infected him with time-released protoacamprosate and other drugs in order to allow him to experience the effects of the alcohol without "tripping over his own feet when he arrived on the bridge the next morning." This required a delicate chemical balance to ensure that the assorted pharmaceuticals did not appear on the random toxicological screens.
Spock's mirror counterpart was able to learn everything that Boyce knew about Pike's precarious health by torturing him with an agonizer. (TOS short story: "The Greater Good")
By 2267, he had been succeeded as the Enterprise's chief medical officer by Leonard McCoy's mirror counterpart. (TOS episode: "Mirror, Mirror")
