Phillips was a 23rd century Human man who served Starfleet as a security guard, assigned to Federation starship USS Enterprise in the 2270s.
Biography[]
Phillips and another guard came onto the Enterprise bridge when V'Ger's plasma-energy probe was there. When Phillips reached for his phaser, the probe unleashed a miniature version of one of V'Ger's bolts of green plasma-energy, which struck Phillips, causing him to vanish. Admiral James T. Kirk and the other bridge crew initially assumed Phillips had been killed. However, when the probe subsequently vanished with Lieutenant Ilia, Kirk realized that Phillips might have been transported aboard V'Ger.
During Commander Spock's subsequent exploration of V'Ger's memory banks, he saw a vision of Phillips along with one of the Klingon ship which V'Ger had previously destroyed, implying that Phillips, like the Klingon vessel, had been "patterned" by V'Ger. At the conclusion of the V'Ger Incident, Kirk listed Phillips, along with Lieutenant Ilia and Commander Willard Decker, as "missing".
