The Phoenix eagle was an avian lifeform of unknown origin, and was unique in reacting to other sentient lifeforms. If an eagle noticed another being, it would grant them one of its primary feathers as a sign that it recognized them as a mature being. Both Captain Hunter and her great aunt were awarded with feathers from the Phoenix eagle. (TOS novel: The Entropy Effect)
