In the year 2372, a group of rogue Jem'Hadar attacked Deep Space 9 and stole several photonic amplifiers, along with other technologies such as EPS power stabilizers and microfusion initiators, to be used to bring an Iconian gateway in the Gamma Quadrant online. (DS9 episode: "To the Death")

In 2376, Geordi La Forge used several photonic amplifiers to open an Iconian gateway that was aboard a Petraw ship. (TNG - Gateways novel: Doors Into Chaos)
