Photons Be Free was a holonovel created in the year 2377 by The Doctor, the EMH of the USS Voyager, to portray the difficulties of life as a hologram.

Captain Jenkins

The amoral Captain Jenkins.

In the novel, the viewer would take on the role of the EMH and would be mistreated by the crew of the ship, the USS Vortex. Throughout the novel, major personality flaws were present in characters the EMH would interact with. Captain Jenkins, a clear misrepresentation of Kathryn Janeway, killed an injured crewman so the EMH would be free to treat the Tom Paris-alike Lieutenant Marseilles. The Doctor also symbolized his burden of knowing the mobile emitter was his only freedom by changing it from a communicator-sized device, to an unwieldy, heavy backpack. The Doctor was negotiating with the publishing house, Broht and Forester, to release Photons Be Free. (VOY episode: "Author, Author")

Broht met with Quark on Deep Space 9 soon after withdrawing Photons Be Free from circulation. (DS9 eBook: Lust's Latinum Lost (and Found))
