Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

A pill or tablet is a small dosage of medicine that is taken orally.

During a bout of insomnia, Doctor Leonard McCoy contacted Captain James T. Kirk to inform the Captain about his trouble sleeping. Kirk advised McCoy to try taking the same kind of red sleeping pill that McCoy had given him a week before, noting that McCoy would have no trouble sleeping then. (TOS episode: "The Man Trap")

A comp-ox capsule provided breathable oxygen for submerged humanoids for 24 hours. These pills were taken by a landing party to explore the underwater civilization on Bwuja in 2266. (TOS comic: "The World Beneath the Waves")

Pills could also be used to poison individuals. Determined to seek revenge against his former USS Stargazer crewmates, Doctor Carter Greyhorse brought a supply of Ku'thei pills on board the USS Enterprise when several of the surviving Stargazer crew boarded the Enterprise on a journey to Daa'V in 2367. Not well known to Federation science at the time, the pills were not flagged or screened out by Starfleet transporters. Greyhorse attempted to poison both Commander Tricia Cadwallader and Captain Gilaad Ben Zoma before he was stopped. After being arrested his supply of Ku'thei pills was discovered in his quarters. (TNG novel: Reunion)

Background[]

In the German dub of Star Trek: The Original Series, Kirk's nickname for Leonard McCoy is Pille (German for pill) instead of Bones. In the ST movie: Star Trek (2009) movie, McCoy tells Kirk his divorce was "a bitter pill to swallow" to explain the original use.
