Thousands of years ago, Planaria suffered a cataclysm that led to the extinction of its native sentient species, the humanoid Planarians. The Planarians had developed advanced genetic engineering, of which complete records were discovered by Federation Starfleet at some point before the 2380s decade.
In February of the year 2382, Lieutenant Samantha Wildman of the Goldenbird told Doctor Sharak about the Planarians and their homeworld to aid Sharak's investigation of the catomic plague. (VOY novel: Acts of Contrition)
