Because of the unique security requirements inherent in transporting the President of the United Federation of Planets, a number of different systems have been developed.
Intrasystem Travel[]
The President is typically transported within star systems by one of three Federation Starfleet shuttlecraft: The T'Maran, the sh'Rothress, and the al-Rashid. Named after three 22nd century presidents, the shuttles are based out of the Palais de la Concorde and most commonly provide transportation within the Sol system. When the president travels, at least two of the shuttles are always used, so that there would always be a decoy. The president's staff and bodyguards are usually evenly divided between the craft. All comm channels established between the shuttles and other Federation outposts or ships are secure, and the forward half of all of the shuttles can be cut off from the back through a descending bulkhead to provide privacy and to prevent shuttle pilots from hearing information they lack the security clearance to know. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation)
In an alternate universe's 2280s, Starfleet vessels, including shuttlecraft, transporting the Federation President bore the call sign Starfleet One. (ST novel: The Chimes at Midnight)
Interstellar Travel[]
For inter-system trips, the President typically travels aboard the dedicated presidential transport, a non-Starfleet ship bearing the name Paris One. (ST novel: A Singular Destiny.) The President may also sometimes travel aboard a Starfleet starship, typically a capital ship. Amongst Starfleet vessels, the USS Venture has most commonly been used for Presidential transport of late. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation)
In June of 2380, Paris One was transporting Federation President Nanietta Bacco from Kazar to Earth when she was caught in an unexpected ion storm. Her warp drive, navigation, and communications systems were completely disabled, leaving President Bacco cut off from the rest of the galaxy for three days. During that time, the Borg Supercube Crisis unfolded -- much to Bacco's later dismay. (ST novel: A Singular Destiny)
Following the Borg Invasion of 2381, President Bacco considered the idea of using Paris One to slingshot around the sun and travel back in time, and allowing Arafel Pagro to have the presidency in her place. (ST novel: A Singular Destiny)
- Whether or not Paris One is typically accompanied by any other ships for security reasons is unestablished.
- Paris One and Starfleet One, are, of course, the Federation's counterparts to Air Force OneWP and Marine OneWP, respectively callsigns for United States Air ForceWP and United States Marine CorpsWP aircraft tasked with transporting the President of the United StatesWP.
