Memory Beta, non-canon Star Trek Wiki

Profit and Lace is an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It was directed by Alexander Siddig and written by Ira Steven Behr and Hans Beimler. It aired in May 1998 as part of the sixth season.

Grand Nagus Zek is deposed after introducing laws making Ferengi females equal to males; Quark is forced to masquerade as a woman to help him back into power.

Summary[]

Quark is in the middle of giving his new employee Aluura a performance review, when Rom interrupts them. He has been unable to contact anyone on Ferenginar. Their mother Ishka and Grand Nagus Zek arrive in the station and reveal that Zek has been deposed for a new law giving equal rights to Ferengi women. Brunt has been named as the acting Grand Nagus. Zek plans to bring members of the Ferengi Commerce Authority to DS9, where Ishka will make the financial case for equal opportunities for women. The only commissioner to agree to the meeting is Nilva, the chairman of the Slug-o-Cola company.

Just before the meeting, Quark and his mother have a heated argument and Ishka collapses. She is saved by Dr. Bashir, but will not be able to meet with Nilva. Zek suggests that Quark undergo a sex change and he becomes “Lumba”. Nilva is impressed by “Lumba” and even Brunt claiming that “Lumba” is actually a man doesn’t dilute Nilva’s positive opinion, and he agrees to support Zek.
