USS Chimera, first of the class.
Project Lotus was a Federation starship design undertaking, a top-secret ship and weapon development project led by the Advanced Starship Design Bureau of Starfleet at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards from 2405 to 2409. (STO Issue 02: "USS Chimera")
History and specifications[]
After transferring off the USS Enterprise-E, Nog was promoted to the rank of commander and joined the ASDB at Utopia Planitia. There, her became a key contributor to the secret Project Lotus.
Project Lotus was conceived in part due to rising tensions between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.
The project included a weapons system called Dynamic Tactical System (DTS). This system was designed to fit into the guts of the Starfleet heavy destroyer class. It involved transforming the hull of the ship to reveal a phaser lotus weapon emitter.
The Federation-Klingon War broke out in 2405. The intricacies of the DTS delayed the launch of the Chimera-class.
The USS Chimera launched in 2407. Nog, who had continued his command training program while working on Project Lotus, was promoted to captain and received command of the prototype. Nog was the first Ferengi to reach the rank of captain in Starfleet.
The complexity of the DTS kept the number of Chimera-class ships low. (STO Issue 02: "USS Chimera")
The class was offered to veteran Starfleet officers ranked rear admiral, lower half and above. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
The Utopian ASDB team kept refining the heavy destroyer post-launch. In 2410, the tier 6-rated Manticore-class heavy destroyer was launched and equipped with the "Enhanced Dynamic Tactical System" (EDTS). By then, the Klingon Defense Force and the Romulan Republic Navy had their own EDTS-equipped counterparts, the Duvqu'- and Dinaes-class heavy destroyers. Later that year, the Khitomer Alliance members allowed their military forces for a commanding officer of any rank to operate ships rated tier 6, including the upgraded Chimera- and Manticore-classes.
