In the 24th century, Starfleet symbolised a promotion by adding the pip of a new rank to an officer's Starfleet uniform. (DS9 episode: "The Adversary")

In the 25th century, members of the Khitomer Alliance, including Federation Starfleet, the Klingon Defense Force, the Romulan Republic Navy and the Dominion's Vanguard Fleet, provided a new rank insignia to a promoted officer in their personnel files. Not all of these military services practiced Starfleet's display of visible rank insignia. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")

When a promotion to a senior rank was required due to emergency circumstances, Starfleet granted a field promotion. Following the Battle of Sector 001, Lieutenant Lian T'su of the USS Budapest received a field promotion to the rank of lieutenant commander and the position of second officer. Space station commander Benjamin Sisko of Deep Space 9 was promoted to captain in 2371 when he became the commanding officer of the USS Defiant, an escort starship newly assigned to DS9. The celebratory ceremony was held at DS9. (DS9 episode: "The Adversary")

Following a seven-year odyssey through the Delta Quadrant, the majority crew of the Intrepid-class starship USS Voyager were promoted two steps in rank to make up for limited opportunities. (VOY novel: Homecoming)

In 2380, Ensign Brad Boimler of the USS Cerritos sought a promotion to a higher rank, whereas Ensign Beckett Mariner had received promotions and demotions several times. (LD episode: "Second Contact")
