The Protocloud was a interstellar cluster surrounded by a colorful nebula. Since it is a stellar nursery it was saturated with deadly beta tachyon radiation. Nevertheless in it's center was a habitable planet that was seeded with Humans from 13th century germany by the Preservers. The planet was accessible for the outside world by an artificial corridor, presumly also created by the Preservers. (TNG novel: Here There Be Dragons)
