A Provost Marshal was a peacetime position held by officers of the United Federation of Planets Starfleet. These individuals were charged with the responsibility of maintaining order on a planet and, at times, an entire star system. This meant that they held the authority to; implement regulations needed for common welfare, enforce Federation law and impose sentences or penalties on either civilian or military personnel.
