For other uses, see Proxima.

Proxima (also known as Proxima Centauri or Alpha Centauri C), along with companion stars named Rigil and Quindar, is part of the Alpha Centauri trinary star system in Federation space, located a few parsecs from Earth. At 4.2 light-years distance, Proxima is the closest stellar body to the Sol system. (TOS novel: Mission to Horatius)

Specifics

Proxima Centauri was a red dwarf star. (ST reference: Star Trek Maps, Last Unicorn RPG modules: Planets of the UFP, Star Trek: The Next Generation Core Game Book)

The system's other two stars were 30 to 40 AU apart. Proxima orbited both at a distance more than 400 times that distance, about 0.6 light years away. (TOS novels: Time for Yesterday, Federation, Crisis on Centaurus)

Proxima made life possible in the trinary system. Its trajectory pushed comets inward, providing the system's planets with abundant water and atmospheric gases, and sped up the evolution of life there, while also creating more extinction-level events. (TLE novel: The Buried Age)

Federation starships called USS Proxima were named as such for this location. (ST references: Star Fleet Technical Manual, Spaceflight Chronology)

History

In 2154, a Klingon warship was spotted near Proxima Colony after a group of augments commandeered a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. It was speculated that this ship could have been conducting reconnaissance for a possible future strike which ultimately didn't happen. (ENT episode: "Borderland")
