Proxima (also known as Proxima Centauri or Alpha Centauri C), along with companion stars named Rigil and Quindar, is part of the Alpha Centauri trinary star system in Federation space, located a few parsecs from Earth. At 4.2 light-years distance, Proxima is the closest stellar body to the Sol system. (TOS novel: Mission to Horatius)
Proxima Centauri is also the possible location of an Earth colony, known as Proxima Colony, and dating to at least the mid-22nd century.
In 2154, a Klingon warship was spotted near Proxima Colony after a group of augments commandeered a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. It was speculated that this ship could have been conducting reconnaissance for a possible future strike which ultimately didn't happen. (ENT episode: "Borderland")
Federation starships called USS Proxima were named as such for this location. (ST references: Star Fleet Technical Manual, Spaceflight Chronology)
