A psionic amplifier or psionic resonator is a device used to amplify telepathic and psionic energy.
History and specifics[]
For communication[]
In 2254, José Tyler boosted Nano's telepathic abilities with a psionic amplifier from the USS Enterprise. Sita Mohindas later threw it at a pyrotechnic force to create a feedback loop and dissipate it. (EV comic: "One of a Kind")
In 2269, the Crown enabled to telepathic communications between its wearer Jaenab and the Ialatl. (TOS novel: The Weight of Worlds)
In 2270, a landing party from the Enterprise uncovered a working Slaver psionic amplifier helmet within a stasis box in a newly discovered Slaver outpost. After donning it twice, however, it would short-circuit. (Heritage Models RPG module: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier)
In 2371, Doctor Robert Halliday believed that organic psionic amplifiers within tentacles lining cave walls on Thanet would enable communications between the dailongzhen and the dailong. (TNG novel: Do Comets Dream?)
As a weapon[]
One billion years ago, the Slaver Empire invented a helmeted psionic amplifier that boosted the wearer's intelligence permanently and also boosted telepathic ability for a short time. (Heritage Models RPG module: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier)
- Slavers used the helmet for domination and manipulation. A rebel species known as the Tnuctipun used a psionic amplifier to force the Slavers to commit suicide, causing their extinction. (Slaver article at Fandom's Larry Niven Wiki.)
500,000 years ago, during the Great Psionic War, the Selakar aimed to develop a metaweapon-level psionic amplifier to force obedience on anyone who opposed them. The prototype devices appeared to be lenticular, organic quasicrystals about 18" wide and 6" tall. Siri who were employed to invent them warned Arret and helped capture the prototypes. Two of the devices were kept without their power cells deep within two Arretian colony planets as last-resort deterrent weapons. Lirahn acquired one of the devices, which had been stolen by the Vomnin Confederacy, and as a result had to be kept trapped by the DTI within the Axis of Time. (DTI novel: Watching the Clock)
The ancient Vulcan weapon, the vorl-tak psionic weapon, uses a planet's gravitational field as a psionic amplifier, channeling emotion into an intensely powerful and destructive energy beam. (EV comic: "Cloak and Dagger")
The Stone of Gol was a devastating Vulcan weapon, but it became powerless after the Time of Awakening when Vulcans learned peace, as the psionic resonator could only amplify negative emotions. (TNG episode: "Gambit")
The Borg in the 24th century took longer to adapt to exposure from the advanced technology of a psionic amplifier, taking days or longer. (Decipher RPG module: Aliens)
In the 25th century, Starfleet psionic agitators were able to increase a person's perceived threat ability for up to ten minutes. (ST video game: Star Trek Online)
In an alternate reality, Demora Sulu was attacked by a psionic resonator. (ST - Myriad Universes - Shattered Light novella: The Tears of Eridanus)
