Psychiatry is an area of medical science which deals with emotional and psychological disorders, one of many focused disciplines within the Federation Starfleet. A practitioner is called a psychiatrist, who often served at a psychiatric facility.

Specifics[]

Psychiatrists had the authority to relieve personnel from duty and provide recommendations on whether they could return to duty. In the past, personnel could be discharged from military service for psychological reasons. (TLE novel: Well of Souls)

Psychiatrists believed personnel on isolated deep space voyages needed to participate in recreation and small pleasures for their mental well-being. (ENT novelization: The Expanse)

Psychiatric science believed that confinement was unnecessary for most people, and most psychiatric facilities had limited security. (TLE novel: Deny Thy Father)

Psychiatric practitioners also commonly participated as a patient. (TNG - A Time to... novel: A Time to Heal)

Following his escape from Riverdale Asylum in 1955, a court-appointed psychiatrist eventually cleared Benny Russell to return to public life. (ST - Typhon Pact novel: Raise the Dawn)

On 16 July 1969, Roberta Lincoln reported to Gary Seven that James Wainwright suffered a nervous breakdown and had been placed in a United States Air Force psychiatric facility. (TOS - Strange New Worlds III short story: "The Aliens Are Coming!")

In the 2260s, Harry Mudd was psychiatrically treated, but its effectiveness was disputed. (TOS episode & Mudd's Angels novelization: Mudd's Women)

In 2293, after the apparent death of James T. Kirk aboard the USS Enterprise-B, Leonard McCoy started seeing a psychiatrist regularly for a year. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)

In the 2360s, psychiatrist Kevin Pointer treated Morgan Primus for depression every Tuesday and Thursday for three months. (NF - No Limits short story: "Alice, on the Edge of Night")

In 2366 aboard the USS Enterprise-D, Doctor Selar selected Gavar, Johannes Grunewalt, Itoh, Penelope Johnson, Logan, and Selinski for a mission because all had experience working in psychiatric wards. (TNG novel: The Eyes of the Beholders)
