For other uses of the term, see Quarantine (disambiguation).

A quarantine is the act of enforcing isolation in an attempt to contain a dangerous element, such as disease, malevolent lifeform, or other dangers. An individual can be placed under quarantine, as can a ship, planet, or even an entire area of space.

In the 23rd century, Vendor was quarantined due to the Vendorians' natural deceptiveness and ability to rearrange their molecular structure. Romulans broke the quarantine trying to hire them out as spies. They eventually succeeded, with one of them assuming the identity of Carter Winston to lure the USS Enterprise across the Romulan Neutral Zone in 2269. (TAS episode & Log Two novelization: The Survivor)

In 2364, following the death of Tasha Yar at the hands of Armus on Vagra II, Captain Jean-Luc Picard placed Vagra II under quarantine to keep Armus from escaping the planet. (TNG episode: "Skin of Evil")

In 2369, when the aphasia virus was released on Deep Space 9, the station and all docked ships were placed under quarantine in order to keep the virus from spreading to Bajor or any other worlds. (DS9 episode: "Babel")

Later in the year station personnel on Deep Space 9 began constructing a quarantine module in order to be able to isolate people carrying infection on incoming ships. This module was converted into a space station for use at the Gamma Quadrant end of the Bajoran wormhole to monitor traffic and establish a Bajoran claim to the space around that end of the wormhole. (DS9 novel: Bloodletter)

In 2370 Beverly Crusher told Admiral Adams half of the crew of the USS Enterprise-D were under quarantine following an outbreak of Andorian measles. In reality the crew were perfectly healthy and Dr Crusher had made up the outbreak to provide cover for their investigation of a Starfleet conspiracy on Earth. (TNG comic: "An Inconvenient Truth")

In 2260 of the Kelvin timeline, Captain James T. Kirk placed Parthenon 559 under quarantine to avoid bloodshed between a Federation advance mining team and a group of peaceful Gorn.(TOS comic: "Star Trek, Issue 24")
