History[edit | edit source]
In the 23rd century, noted Professor Osric Whipple retired to a seaside mansion on Quaraxus. He built power generators in his laboratory in hopes of inventing a planetary defense screen to deflect meteorites and other dangerous stellar bodies.
In 2266, the starship USS Enterprise was passing near Quaraxus when Hikaru Sulu and Spock detected an electromagnetic disruption in the planetoid's atmosphere that was tossing everything from groundcars to steel beams into orbit. Recalling that Whipple lived there and suspecting the worst, James T. Kirk and Spock beamed directly to the inventor's residence, shut down short-circuited equipment and revived the unconscious professor.
The Quaraxus government also assumed Whipple was at fault and issued his arrest warrant for disrupting public safety in violation of Part 4, Section 7 of Quaraxus's criminal code. Kirk thought that the authorities were overreacting, and brought Whipple aboard the Enterprise hoping that cooler heads would prevail. (TOS comic: "Destination Annihilation")
