Quarton was a Starfleet officer assigned to the USS Enterprise as an assistant engineer. In 2273, during the V'Ger crisis, she heard Captain James T. Kirk issue Starfleet Order 2005, an order to allow the ship's matter and antimatter reserves to mix uncontrolled, which would destroy the Enterprise. She asked Commander Montgomery Scott, the ship's chief engineer, why the self-destruct had been commanded, and whether it would successfully destroy V'Ger. (TOS novelization: The Motion Picture)

The novelization of the film is contradicted by the film itself, in which the engineer is named Ross, and the TOS novel: Ex Machina, which states that the engineer was Theresa Ross.
