Ranger was a dog which James T. Kirk had owned as a pet when he was a child.
When Ranger lost a leg in an accident, Jim watched over him for days, bringing him food and carrying him around. Eventually, Sam Kirk convinced Jim that the dog had to learn how to get around on its own, which it soon did. They then began calling him "Tripod."
In 2267, Kirk was reminded of Ranger when he saw how well Siamese twins Abon and Delor had adapted to their condition. (TOS novel: Gemini)
