Ransom Castle was a 23rd century industrial ore freighter, a starship privately-owned by the Ransom Carnvale International Mining Corporation.

History and specifics[]

Ransom Castle was launched in the 2220s decade. It was equipped with loading equipment and other tools needed for ore hauling. By the 2260s, she was still in service, with a cruising speed of warp three and a maximum speed of warp five for brief bursts.

In the 2260s, the freighter was commanded by a former Starfleet cadet, Nancy Ransom, and crewed by Humans with a connection to Port Apt.

In the year 2269, the mining corporation entered Ransom Castle into The Great Starship Race hosted by the Rey of the planet Gullrey. Passenger Turrice Roon traveled aboard the freighter as its official observer.

During the race, the Ransom Castle ran into some difficulty when Ransom sought a short-cut and entered a dangerous navigational hazard created millions of years ago by the collision of a red giant and a neutron star. Unknown to Captain Ransom, her vessel was being pursued by the Romulan cruiser Red Talon. Its Commander Valdus had Roon abducted, then sent a boarding party to take control of Ransom Castle and rig it to serve as a cobalt fusion bomb to annihilate Gullrey. Fortunately, personnel from the USS Enterprise and sly tactics from Ransom Castle crew allowed them to regain control of their vessel. (TOS novel: The Great Starship Race)
