“Rats in a Maze” is a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine comic that was written by Mark A. Altman. It was published in 1995. It was part two of a three part story, The Maquis: Soldier of Peace.

Summary[]

Bashir has been detained by the Cardassians in the Goka prisoner camp, after he, Maquis leader Tessa Blake and her soldiers were caught trying to rescue the crews of Voyager and Chakotay’s ship. Bashir asks to talk to the overseer of the camp, Gul Dulcet, but is knocked to the floor by a Cardassian soldier’s phaser rifle. Bashir hopes that Commander Sisko has started to investigate Bashir’s disappearance. Jadzia is concerned that Bashir is overdue but Sisko and O’Brien think that Bashir is having a good time on Risa.

Bashir is put to work in the mining camp, but wonders why he hasn’t seen Tessa since their capture, or Voyager and Chakotay’s crews for that matter. Tessa’s colleague Anderson comments that their intelligence could not be wrong as Tessa received the information herself.

Bashir again tries to have the Cardassian soldiers take him to their overseer and again is assaulted by a guard. Bashir threatens the guard by mentioning Garak and the Obsidian Order. Another guard, Tran overhears the exchange and agrees to help Bashir for the reward.

On Deep Space 9, Garak is brought the information about Bashir’s imprisonment by a Yridian courier and goes to Commander Sisko with the information. Sisko wants to contact Gul Dukat, but Garak warns him not too. Garak is correct, as Dukat is working with Gul Dulcet. For the mission Sisko will need a Cardassian shuttle and Quark points him to the Qualor surplus depot. Garak joins Sisko on the mission to rescue Bashir, but when they beam down, Dulcet is waiting for them with soldiers pointing their weapons at them.
