Star Trek: Red Alert! is a starship combat game based on the "Diskwars" system. Described as a customizable disk game, it was developed by Last Unicorn Games in 2000. It was published just prior to Last Unicorn Games being bought by Wizards of the CoastWP and soon after, WotC lost the license to Star Trek and the game was discontinued.

Summary[]

The Diskwars system was composed of "Starter Sets" and "Booster Packs". Each Starter Set consisted of a given starship from one of five races (Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Ferengi, and Cardassian), its crew, specialized equipment, tech upgrades, and the chance of acquiring additional starships from that faction.

Price per Starter Pack was about $12 USD. Each booster pack was approximately $6 USD, and contained about 16 new, random disks.

Advertising announced 48 different ships from the five races were available.

Background[]

All photos used for individual discs, mostly personnel and personal gear, are taken from The Next Generation or Deep Space Nine TV shows, and from the movie Star Trek: First Contact. Ship tokens are original 3D models rendered for the game. Tech discs designs are original to Red Alert!, though they are drawn to suggest the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D Blueprints.

Based off the timelines of Deanna Troi and Edward Jellico, Star Trek: Red Alert! seems to be taking place in the year 2370. The game identifies the ranks of counselor Troi as Commander, which she earned in 2370. Edward Jellico's rank is stated as Captain. Jellico is know to be a captain in 2369 and becomes an Admiral in 2370. This suggests that the game is played in early 2370, after Deanna Troi gets promoted to Commander, and before Edward Jellico gets his promotion to Admiral. Of course, the appearance of Ensign Crusher causes this supposition to be called into question, as he was either in Starfleet Academy or resigned to being a civilian/Traveler in 2370. This could be an alternate Wesley related to his Traveler powers, or it could signify that he is still an Ensign when aboard the Enterprise.
