A refit or retrofit refers to the overhauling of a space vessel with updated technology, most often to extend the useful life of the vessel.

History and specifics[]

The Federation starship USS Enterprise underwent an extensive, eighteen-month refit completed in the year 2273. So extensive was the refit that Captain Willard Decker told Admiral James T. Kirk that the Enterprise was almost totally new. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Motion Picture). Very little was left unmodified during the refit. About the only things left untouched were structural supports in the saucer section and those were incorporated into the new design. (ST reference: Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise)
