Rel Obertag was a Betazoid politician who served as Governor of Betazed prior to 2373. Obertag was one of the candidates for the office of President of the United Federation of Planets in the election of 2372, running against the incumbent President Jaresh-Inyo, but on a platform that was less militaristic than that of fellow candidate (and eventual winner) Min Zife.
