"Renewal" was the debut issue of the TOS Untold Voyages miniseries published by Marvel Comics in 1998. The story begins at the final moments of TOS movie: The Motion Picture, depicting the start of the refit USS Enterprise's shakedown cruise for Captain Kirk's second five-year mission.
Summary[]
The Enterprise's shakedown cruise is interrupted when a squadron of Klingon battlecruisers attempt to seize the refit starship. Kirk disables the lead vessel by channeling all phaser power through the engines, delivering a massive blow that disables both the battlecruiser and the Enterprise. Kirk's bluff that this is a viable weapon convinces the Klingons to retreat, and Admiral Nogura is finally swayed to allow Kirk to remain in command.

Background[]
- This story picks up more or less instantly from the final onscreen frames of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, which depict the USS Enterprise leaping to warp speed following the resolution of the V'Ger Crisis. This issue's storyline takes place prior to the novel Ex Machina (set two weeks after the end of the movie), and just before a flashback-section of the DC Comics graphic novel Debt of Honor (where the Enterprise attempts to trace V'Ger's point of origin).
- Federation and Klingon ships were able to shoot at each other without Organian repercussion, leading Kirk to think that the Organian Peace Treaty might no longer be valid. Ayelborne suspended the treaty in 2269, in TOS - The Enterprise Experiment comic: "Part 5", but several stories set in the 2270s and 2280s showed that the Federation and Klingons still thought it could be or was being enforced. By 2285, Organians were found to be under the influence of Excalbians, in TOS comics: "Errand of War", "Deadly Allies".
