While the Federation stands on the brink of war, Captain Picard is stranded in the past.
Description[]
- Twenty-five years ago, Captain Jean-Luc Picard conducted breakthrough negotiations with an aggressive race called the Gorn. Now, on the anniversary of that achievement, Captain Picard and the USS Enterprise are headed for the Gorn homeworld to continue that important work.
- But when the ship stops to investigate a mysterious alien artifact, Captain Picard is suddenly hurled through time and space. Just as Commander Riker and the starship Enterprise crew begin an impossible search for their captain, the Gorn summit goes terribly wrong.
- As war looms over the galaxy and Picard is desperately needed on the Gorn homeworld, the captain finds himself stranded in the past on a planet called Cestus III at a crucial turning point in Federation history. Now, caught in a deadly situation that challenges Picard's most cherished beliefs, he must weigh the fate of a world against the future of the entire Federation...
Summary[]
Twenty-five years ago, Picard had the Federation's first formal contact with the Gorn, where he forestalled their attempt to declare war by challenging their leader to a duel and convincing them to negotiate instead. Now, Picard has been invited to the Gorn homeworld for crucial negotiations.
En route, the Enterprise comes across an alien artifact that shows similarity with Iconian technology. Carrying out a brief investigation, Picard is left stranded aboard the station when it malfunctions and a power surge causes him to be transported through time and space. Riker is given a limited amount of time to locate him before he will have to proceed to the Gorn homeworld and have to take Picard's place.
Picard has been transported back in time to Cestus III, a matter of days before the Gorn will attack and practically wipe out the Federation colony there. He tells the colonists he is a merchant captain stranded there by the Orions. The base commander, Commodore Travers, is highly suspicious of him but Doctor Julia Santos befriends him. When Picard's cover story is blown, he tells Julia who she really is and she helps him correct a dangerous configuration of the colony's reactor that would have destroyed it before the Gorn arrived.
Picard flees the colony and buries his communicator where it will survive until the 24th century, hoping searchers will detect the alloy, yet to be invented. When the Gorn attack, he is unable to stand and watch and goes to join the colonists in their last stand. Ro, made acting first officer by Riker while Data and Geordi are on the station, convinces him to enlist the aid of the Bajoran outlaw group the Bon Amar in the search and they are able to detect the communicator.
Just as Picard is about to be one of the last killed, the crew on the station are able to transport him to safety. The station is destroyed by a self-destruct shortly after the Enterprise crew get clear and Picard is safely delivered to the summit.
