A rhinoceros or rhino was a type of animal native to Earth, an herbivorous mammal. Similar species lived on other planets.

History and specifics[]

Rhinos had four-toed hooves. (TOS novel: First Frontier)

Rhino horns were once ground down by Humans for use as an aphrodisiac. (ENT episode: "Fight or Flight")

In the Kelvin timeline, Uhura family lore claimed Nyota Uhura's Aunt Uhnu Uhura once "butted heads" with a rhinoceros, explaining extensive damage to the language center of her brain. (TOS - YA novel: The Delta Anomaly)

In the 2260s, an epidemic on Earth was fatal to rhinos and several other wildlife species. In 2267, the USS Enterprise was assigned to retrieve some rhinos from other planets in order to repopulate them on Earth. The crew also brought back members of bear, camel, chimpanzee, hippopotamus, leopard, parrot, platypus, tiger, turtle, and zebra species. (TOS - A Book to Color comic: "Third story")

In 2381, a stuffed rhino was among the collection of Kerner Hauze. (LD episode: "Kayshon, His Eyes Open")
