The rho Ophiuchi nebula is a nebular cloud located 427 light years from Earth, visible within the Ophiuchus constellation. It is a member of the Scorpius-Centaurus Association star cluster.

History and specifics[]

The nebula consists of a blue gas cloud described as thick as bouillabaisse in some sections, yet sometimes thin enough to see other stars through it. Cloud formations block subspace communication to outside sources. The nebula contains a B class blue star and at least one planet.

In the 2160s, a colony ship from Earth visited the nebula and established a colony on its planet Rampart.

In 2356, USS Huxley entered the nebula and was destroyed.

In 2366, the USS Enterprise-D located the recorder marker from Huxley outside the nebula, damaged from a nuclear detonation. Starfleet directed the Enterprise-D to enter the nebula and investigate. (TNG novel: Gulliver's Fugitives)

By 2380, the Sco-Cen star cluster containing rho Ophiuchi had only been fractionally surveyed. (TTN novel: Orion's Hounds)
