- For other uses, see Rhode Island.
The Rhode Island-class was a Federation starship class, a tier 2 science vessel type in service in the 25th century. (VOY episode & novelization: Endgame, STO - The Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
The Rhode Island was derived from the 2370s Nova-class design. Due to their modular nature, components such as saucer, hull, nacelles and nacelle pylons were interchangeable between the Rhode Island and its sister classes. The ship class was also in use by the Terran Empire in the mirror universe. In 2409, Federation Starfleet gained access to some of these counterparts through the Lobi Crystal Consortium. Service history[edit | edit source]
The Rhode Island-class had entered service by the year 2409. It was the first starship class equipped with a photonic displacer console, which created a holographic decoy of the vessel to mislead enemies during combat. (STO - The Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
In 2410 the lead ship of the class, the USS Rhode Island, was under the command of Captain Harry Kim. (STO - The Delta Quadrant missions: "Alliances", "Takedown")
Alternate timeline[edit | edit source]
In a timeline where USS Voyager took 25 years to return home, the Rhode Island-class had entered service by 2404. (VOY episode & novelization: Endgame)
Specifications[edit | edit source]
The Rhode Island-class was comparable in size to the earlier Nova-class. It was armed with phaser arrays and photon torpedoes and carried a photonic displacer device capable of creating a false sensor image of itself for short periods as a decoy. (ST video game: Star Trek Online)
Livery[edit | edit source]
The modular design of the Rhode Island-class science vessel allowed its commanding officer to choose from different designs of livery, which could be modified further at starbases. The basic options were designated Type 1-5 and Veteran. (STO - The Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Furthermore, the installation of deflector shields from specific factions modified the hull appearance, including shields from the Reman Resistance, the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. (STO missions: "Coliseum", "Cold Storage", "Boldly They Rode")
Mirror universe[edit | edit source]
The Terran Empire's version of the Rhode Island-class featured additional engineering capability at the expense of some of its utility as a science vessel. (STO website: Undine Lock Box and Lobi Store Ships)
Known ships[edit | edit source]

Larry Nemecek said on Doug Drexler's blog that he named the USS Rhode Island after the United States state of Rhode Island as a joke: Even though Harry Kim had finally gotten his own command, it was still named after the smallest US state.
