Leonard Cantrell

A bottle of riesling.

A riesling is a type of sweet white wine produced on Earth.

History and specifics[]

In 1519 aboard the city-ship Axion, stranded 22nd century Earth Starfleet starship Columbia personnel Captain Erika Hernandez, First Officer Veronica Fletcher, and CMO Johanna Metzger discussed what they missed most from their lives on Earth that day. For Hernandez, it was wine. She cited riesling along with burgundy, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, chianti, malbec, merlot, pinotage, rioja, sauvignon blanc, and zinfandel. (ST - Destiny novel: Mere Mortals)

In 2369, Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher tasted a sample of a riesling on the holodeck while they were roleplaying characters in the Dixon Hill holonovel The Rich and the Dead. Robert Picard had given his brother the holodeck program as a gift, perhaps to challenge his brother's wine-tasting skills. Picard was suspicious that it might be a German vintage, which winemaker Leonard Cantrell could not legally have owned in America during the events of World War II. That evening Picard and Crusher sneaked back into Cantrell's residence and found a case of 1933 Kronhaus Weinkellerei riesling, well-known as an excellent year, but confirmed Picard's suspictions. (TNG comics: "Reductions & Deductions", "Hidden Agendas!")
