Rivaj was a male Tenkaran who led a group of miners opposed to the government of Prime Minister Obrom. In 2267, he was injured in a confrontation with Tenkaran troops, which had also killed his cell's medic. His group then orchestrated the kidnapping of Starfleet physician Leonard McCoy in order to treat Rivaj, as well as to present the Federation with their grievances against the government.
