In 2004, William Shatner arrived in the community, claiming that he was filming a science fiction movie in the area. In reality Shatner and the producers were playing an elaborate hoax on the residents of Riverside to gauge local reaction. These events were depicted in the SpikeTV miniseries Invasion Iowa.
