Robert Burns

Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796) was a Human poet and a lyricist. He was widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland.

Burns wrote "Address to a Haggis" about the Scottish dish haggis. (ST reference: Star Trek Cookbook) Thus, when Montgomery Scott held a celebration on board the USS Enterprise to commemorate Robert Burns's birthday, he served some haggis to Lieutenant Kevin Reilly. (TOS novel: Probe)

Another of his works was "Tam o' Shanter", a poem about the title character's encounter with demons. (TOS - Invasion! novel: First Strike)

In 2370, Mari ni Connal quoted from Burns's "Ae Fond Kiss". (DS9 novel: Fallen Heroes)

A line from Burns's poem "To a Mouse" became a common saying: "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry." In 2364, a mercenary named "Poet" began to say this as the castle Warrior's Rest on the planet Treva came under attack by President Nalavia's forces and their plans were put in jeopardy. (TNG novel: Survivors) Miles O'Brien often thought of it in its full and original form, such as in 2373 while on Sierra-Bravo 112. (DS9 novel: The Conquered)
