Rogue Saucer.
Description[]
From the back cover: While its own saucer section receives needed repairs, the U.S.S. Enterprise tests a new experimental saucer. In theory, the new saucer can survive a planetary crash landing, but will it come through intact under genuine test conditions? Riker, Data, Worf, and La Forge risk their lives to find out, and so does Admiral Nechayev of Starfleet.
But a dangerous test turns even more deadly when hostile forces seize control of the saucer --and turn it against the Enterprise.
Summary[]
Chapter 1
The U.S.S. Enterprise-D, while on patrol of the Demilitarized Zone, encounters a Pakled Freighter attempting to enter the DMZ without being scanned for weapons. After following standard procedures to stop the vessel, The Enterprise scans the Pakled Vessel which piggybacks a baryon particle beam onto their return sensor signal. This causes severe damage to the bridge, disabling it in the process, and requiring the ship to operate from the Battle Bridge. In the following debrief, it is believed that the attack could only have been enacted by someone with Intimate knowledge of The Enterprise, possibly Ro Laren. Geordi La Forge advises that the repairs will require a Starbase to complete the repairs and recommends replacing the entire bridge module during this time; this is estimated to require one week. Dr. Beverly Crusher recommends the nearby Starbase 211 for the repairs, which will also allow the crew to take shore leave, as Starbase 211 has several recreational facilities, and museums. Data then advises that he will write a new subroutine to check returning scan signals for baryon beams.
Meanwhile the Pakled Freighter Shufola, purchased by the Maquis, approaches a dead and burning settlement called New Hope. The captain of the ship Timothy Wiley (Codename Blue Moon) beams down to meet with The Architect while the Shufula continues on to make cargo deliveries, and then return in a day. In his meeting with the Architect, Wiley advises that the Bayron Beam trick worked, on none other than The Enterprise, which the Architect notes will render that trick unusable as "The Enterprise is the best ship in the fleet" and that all ships in the fleet will now likely be prepared for that trick in the future. They also discuss an upcoming plan that will net The Maquis a "Big Prize", and The Architect reminds Wiley that there are to be no Starfleet casualties during the mission.
